High temperatures give sweeter Nashi pears, but shorter season

The Nashi pear harvest in South Australia started at the beginning of February. The warmer weather has brought the season on a little earlier than last year. "The heat encourages the pears to mature quicker and we have had some extreme heat here in South Australia that has seen them mature slightly quicker, said Penny Reidy, Marketing, BD & Communications Manager at The South Australian Produce Market.

"We have also had less rain through spring and summer – followed by extreme days of heat. Some fruit has been affected by this – not even netting can prevent the 40-degree plus weather from getting through to the pears. The lack of rain is also affecting the size of fruit with more small pears being picked.

Penny said that despite the challenging weather conditions the fruit is eating well. "The restricted watering creates a higher sugar content in the fruit. Although Nashi pears grow across Australia – we like to think the SA grown are the best quality."

There are a number of varieties of Nashi pears, but in South Australia, the 20th-century variety is the most widely grown.

"Normally we will continue to pick pears through until October, however, growers predict the weather conditions will shorten the season by a month or two in 2025."

Nashi pears are well received in Australia. They are a uniquely juicy pear best enjoyed while crunchy before they over ripen.
