Saudi Arabia reaches 76% tomato self-sufficiency

The Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture reported that Saudi Arabia's tomato production reached 691,875 tons in 2023, achieving a self-sufficiency rate of 76%. The production from greenhouses accounted for over 299,581 tons. Open field production surpassed 392,294 tons. This data indicates the ministry's efforts in enhancing the vegetable sector to meet rising demand during Ramadan, contributing to the Kingdom's food security.

The ministry urged consumers to prioritize locally produced tomatoes, noting their quality and nutritional value. It also highlighted the importance of minimizing food waste, particularly as consumption rises during Ramadan.
