South African citrus, anniversaries, tariff talks, and more

It will be a month of anniversary celebrations. "At the upcoming CPMA show, we'll highlight that April will be our 15th anniversary. This coincides with the 100th anniversary of the CPMA itself which we'll also be celebrating," says Gopal K. Gupta of City Wide Produce.

Along with the anniversaries, at the show April 8-10 in Montreal, Gupta and the City Wide Produce team will have several things to talk about, including South African citrus. The company will also be discussing commodities from China and the ease of bringing them to ports in Vancouver and shipping them to the rest of Canada.

New facility in 2025
Also sure to be discussed is the fact that the company is also expanding its business and its physical location. Just last week concrete was poured on its new 26,680 sq. ft. facility around the Campbell Heights area in British Columbia. This introduces expanded capacity for the company to serve both retailers and foodservice/ processors customers in British Columbia and across the country into Eastern Canada. While the company has generally only exhibited at the Vancouver CPMA shows, this year it's exhibiting in Montreal for the first time, looking to create partnerships in Eastern Canada. (Though Gupta has walked the Montreal show a few times.)

At the company's booth, it will be holding activities such as giveaways and more.

Talking tariffs
For now, the company is navigating the tariff situation through increased communication with both growers and customers about potential tariffs on goods imported from the U.S. "Because of this on-off unknown we are adjusting accordingly to best manage the situation," says Gupta. "Between the two rounds of paused tariffs, we were able to talk with both growers and customers to better understand what challenges they were experiencing, allowing us to be better prepared. We want to understand consumer demand and their expectations so we can help find the right balance to support them and forecast for the upcoming quarter or year even" he says. "We will continue to keep our focus on strengthening our partnerships so we can support each other through this."
