In 2024, 75,700 tons of button mushrooms were harvested in Germany. As the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) further reports, this was 2.7 per cent less than in the previous year, but 5.7 per cent more than in the ten-year average from 2014 to 2023. The total harvest of edible mushrooms in companies with at least 0.1 hectares of production space amounted to 77,700 tons in 2024. The vast majority of the edible mushrooms produced were button mushrooms, accounting for 97.5 per cent of the total. The remaining harvest consisted of oyster mushrooms, shiitake, and other specialty mushrooms. 11.7 per cent of the edible mushrooms (9,100 metric tons) were produced in fully organic operations.
Harvest area for button mushrooms down 4.7 per cent
The harvest area for button mushrooms in 2024 was down 4.7 per cent year-on-year at 341 hectares. However, it was still 6.6 per cent above the ten-year average for the years 2014 to 2023. The total harvest area for edible mushrooms was 355 hectares, of which 13.8 per cent was fully organically farmed. In 2014, the total harvest area was 261 hectares, with a fully organic share of 13.9 per cent.
Largest edible mushroom growing areas in Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia
As in previous years, the two most important federal states for the production of edible mushrooms in 2024 were Lower Saxony, with a growing area of 194 hectares, and North Rhine-Westphalia, with a growing area of 77 hectares.
