Low fiber intake in Europe highlights role of California prunes as healthy option

Data indicates that fiber consumption remains low across the UK and Europe. The British Dietetic Association (BDA) reports that UK adults consume approximately two-thirds of the recommended 30g daily. Germany and Norway, the highest consumers in Europe, also fall short of the recommended intake.

The California Prune Board highlights prunes as a potential solution to this shortfall, offering a nutrient-dense snack option. A 100g serving of prunes provides 7.1g of fiber, about a quarter of the daily recommendation. Prunes contain both soluble fiber, linked to reduced heart disease risk, and insoluble fiber, which aids digestion.

Esther Ritson-Elliott, Director of International Marketing and Communications for the California Prune Board, states, "Fiber is finally moving out of protein's shadow and taking center stage as a must-have nutrient thanks to the positive impact its consumption can have on overall health."

Research by Euromonitor International shows a growing consumer interest in natural, unprocessed foods, with 30% willing to pay more for foods with health benefits. Fiber ranks nearly as high as protein in consumer ingredient preferences.

Prunes are the first whole fruit to have an authorized European health claim, with ongoing research examining their impact on the gut microbiome and potential links to bone health.

Esther adds, "California Prunes are a natural, nutritious, and convenient way for consumers to easily boost fiber intake." The California Prune Board employs various promotional strategies to showcase its prunes' quality and nutritional benefits.
