Moldova begins exports to India and remains solid player in apple exports

Despite a decline in apple production and exports in recent years, Moldova remains among the world's top 10 apple exporters, according to a recent report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). Moldova exported approximately 130,000 tons of apples in the 2024-2025 season, slightly increasing from previous years but nearly 50% lower than the 2021-2022 season.

Globally, apple production is expected to decrease by 350,000 tons to 84 million tons, with declines in the EU, U.S., Turkey, and Russia. However, China remains the dominant producer, accounting for 57% of global apple production.

Moldova gains access to the Indian market
India, the world's largest apple importer, purchases around 600,000 tons of apples annually. Recognizing this significant market, Moldova has taken steps to strengthen agricultural ties with India.

During an official visit to New Delhi, Moldovan Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mihai Popșoi met with his Indian counterpart Subrahmanyam Jaishankar. The two ministers signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Agriculture, facilitating an exchange of expertise, technologies, and best practices between Moldovan and Indian farmers.

A key outcome of the meeting was the Indian government's decision, effective February 21, to grant Moldovan apples free access to the Indian market. As a direct result, on March 19, the first container of Moldovan apples will be shipped to India under the new market access regulations.
