Greenhouse production of bell peppers has started early this season out of Ontario, Canada. "As we start to see the Canadian pepper season kick off, we are excited for new volumes to be available to support our year-round pepper program," says Chris Veillon, Vice-President, Marketing for Topline Farms®.

Right now, the company is shipping red, yellow, and orange sweet bell peppers from Canada in addition to peppers from its Mexican program. "The volumes are consistent year over year, without any significant overlap issues with product being grown in Mexico," adds Veillon, noting that throughout the season and in addition to these peppers, the company ships green peppers, mini sweet peppers as well as organic red, yellow and orange sweet bell peppers and organic mini sweet peppers.
Less acreage this year
This season, there is less acreage in Canada dedicated to bell peppers compared to last year due to Fusarium and other pressures from the last growing season.
As for demand, it is strong for the vegetable. "Customers continue to look for bell peppers, regardless of the season," says Veillon, adding that as a vertically integrated greenhouse vegetable company with growing operations in both Canada and Mexico, the company can service retailers with continuous supply year-round.

All of this is leaving prices stable across the market.
