The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) is working to enhance freight transport efficiency with Laos and China, aiming to stimulate trade and strengthen Thailand's role as a regional rail hub. SRT governor Veeris Ammarapala discussed these plans with Lao National Railway Enterprise governor Daochinda Siharath and Lao-China Railway Company (LCR) general manager Liu Hong.
The discussions focused on creating a seamless rail freight network connecting Thailand, Laos, and China, while also enhancing logistical efficiency with Malaysia. Key topics included infrastructure improvements, transport technology development, station upgrades, route connections, and streamlined cross-border freight processes. The parties agreed on a management plan to maximize transport efficiency.
Efforts are underway to reduce logistics costs and boost Thai farmers' competitiveness in international markets, particularly for exports of durians, mangosteens, and tapioca starch. The Laem Chabang-Kunming railway, once completed, will reduce travel time to 2-3 days, compared to a week by sea.
"This can help reinforce Thailand's position as a regional rail transport hub in Asean," said Mr. Veeris. Discussions also covered transshipment yard issues and plans for the upcoming durian export season, as well as updates on the Thai-Lao Friendship Railway Bridge under construction.
The SRT governor visited Vientiane South and Thanaleng cargo stations in Laos, key hubs for rail freight transport to China.
