Early Nuzvid mango exports see price drop

The mango export season has begun in Nuzvid, India, with shipments from March 15. Despite early arrivals, exporters showed initial reluctance due to the bitter taste of premature harvesting. Nuzvid is known for 36 mango varieties, including Banginapalli, Chinna Rasalu, Pedda Rasalu, and Tothapuri. Banginapalli and Chinna Rasalu are prominent in export markets. In 2024, 15,000 metric tons of Banginapalli were exported from the Nunna Mango Market despite a poor yield.

Favorable weather in 2025 led to early market arrivals of Banginapalli and Chinna Rasalu by January. Exports increased with the onset of summer, attracting traders from Haryana, Delhi, Kolkata, and Mumbai to procure fresh mangoes. The price of Banginapalli mangoes has decreased compared to 2024, with top-quality mangoes now priced at approximately US$ 700 per ton, down from US$ 960 per ton in March 2024.

Farmers attribute the price drop to middlemen. "We have a good crop this year, and demand from traders is strong. But middlemen are lowering prices. Many traders are harvesting mangoes directly from farms, further reducing rates," said D Sama Siva Reddy, a farmer from Agiripalli. Conversely, traders cite high production as the cause of the price decline.
