In the framework of World Water Day, the Costa Rican banana company Varcli Pinares S.A., located in Matina, Limón, marked a milestone in the industry by reducing water consumption in its packaging processes by more than 80%, thanks to an innovative method developed by its founder, Felipe Vargas.
This pioneering system eliminates the traditional use of piles in the packing plants by destemming the bananas directly in the field. As a result, the fruit arrives at the factory latex-free, minimizing the need for water to seal wounds and preserve product quality.
"Our commitment to water sustainability is a serious commitment to innovation and environmental responsibility. We've proven that it's possible to significantly reduce water use, protecting this resource, which is essential to our business and the surrounding communities," stated Olman Vargas, Marketing and Projects Manager at Varcli Pinares SA.
In addition, the company has incorporated drones for the targeted application of plant protection products, decreasing the number of applications by more than 30% of its farm. This technology has reduced water use in these tasks by 50% while improving the efficiency of the process.
Costa Rica's banana industry also recycles 100% of the plastics used and protects some 14,500 hectares of forest around its plantations, reaffirming its commitment to the environment.
"Varcli Pinares' example reaffirms the commitment of the Costa Rican banana industry to sustainable, increasingly innovative production and practices that benefit the environment and production," stated Marcial Chaverri, general manager of the National Banana Corporation (Corbana).
