Southern Hemisphere apple exports increased by 9.1% in 2024

According to iQonsulting's 2025 International Apple Market Yearbook, in 2024, global fresh apple exports increased by 0.2%, reaching 7.5 million tons. This increase was driven by shipments from China and the United States, while Italy and Poland saw a decline due to weather issues impacting production. The value of the industry reached $7.69 billion FOB, up 8.1% from the previous year.

The northern hemisphere accounted for 80% of the export volume, totalling 6 million tons. China consolidated its position as the main supplier, thanks to an increase in production and greater availability of exportable fruit.

The southern hemisphere's exports increased by 9.1% in volume, reaching 1.5 million tons. Chile, South Africa, and New Zealand led the region, with a trend towards varietal replacement. Chile led the southern hemisphere's exports with 556,000 tons, i.e., 37% of the total, and an 18.8% growth in shipments. Latin America was the main destination, accounting for 59% of shipments, with an FOB value of $1.05/kg. Brazil was the main importer of Chilean apples, surpassing Colombia for the first time in eight years.

In Europe, the prices of the Gala group were lower than the previous season, while local fruit remained above. The Granny Smith variety started with high prices, which declined after week 21. The Fuji group had a lower performance than in 2023, although the Chilean fruit recorded higher prices in the late stage. The Cripps Pink - Pink Lady group started with low values, rebounding at the end of the season.

In the United States, prices of the traditionally high-priced Honeycrisp variety fell due to increased local production volume and imports. However, organic apple prices remained above conventional prices, with Honeycrisp reaching values above $10 per 3 lb.
