Spanish-born founder of Fresh Fruit Alliance

Obituary: Vicente Tur dies at the age of 98

Vicente Tur passed away at the age of 98 and was buried on March 20. The native Spaniard was the founder and long-time managing director of Fresh Fruit Alliance. It was only in his early 90s that the passionate fruit importer retired from the company and the fruit trade industry for good, according to Roberto Tur, his son and successor at the helm of the company.

Born and raised on his parents' farm, Tur initially worked as an export merchant for a company in Valencia. After recognizing the huge export potential of the German market, he emigrated in 1948 and founded the sole proprietorship Vstur in Munich. Even then, the first major customers included the well-known Swiss retail chains Konsum and Migros. Due to the optimal location and the direct train connections between Spain and Germany, which mainly ran through Friedrichshafen, he moved his company headquarters from Munich to the Lake Constance area in 1955.

'First mover' in Spanish strawberries, Paraguayos, and snack peppers
Under his leadership, the family business developed into a recognized service partner for imported goods from the gardens of Spain. Subsequently, Tur actively shaped the variety of products on German supermarket shelves from the very beginning. "We were, so to speak, first movers when it came to strawberries from the Fresón de Palos cooperative and paraguayos, which we brought to Germany in close cooperation with El Ciruelo. But we have also made our contribution in the vegetable sector by introducing snack peppers in the DACH region together with Agroiris," says Roberto Tur.

Although he passed the baton to his son at the turn of the century, Vicente Tur remained active in the background in the years that followed.
