“Lifepack packaging now available in Costa Rica and Panama”

Aypek, a Turkish company specializing in packaging solutions, has introduced its Lifepack® Modified Atmosphere Bags to the Costa Rican and Panamanian markets through Ceiba Agribusiness. According to Juan José Bolaños, General Director of Ceiba Agribusiness and an authorized agent of Aypek, Turkiye, these bags help extend the shelf life of fresh produce, allowing exporters to maintain quality during transit:

"Modified Atmosphere Packaging, or MAP, has been adopted in multiple regions, including Europe, Asia, and the Americas. The demand for longer shelf life and reduced waste has encouraged the use of MAP technology. The expansion into Costa Rica and Panama offers producers in these countries a way to meet the requirements of export markets that involve longer shipping times."

Bolaño emphasizes that Modified Atmosphere Packaging does more for maintaining freshness compared to regular packaging. "MAP involves adjusting oxygen, carbon dioxide, and humidity levels inside packaging to slow the natural respiration process of fresh produce. By lowering oxygen and increasing carbon dioxide, MAP reduces metabolic activity in fruits and vegetables, delaying ripening and microbial growth. This helps retain texture, color, and nutritional value while limiting moisture loss and spoilage. Life pack bags are designed with specific permeability properties to maintain these conditions, helping fresh produce withstand extended transportation periods and reducing weight loss in supply chains."

Latin American growers can take advantage of the packaging as it's an opportunity to meet the export market requirements for long distance export, Bolaño explains: "The fresh produce industry is working toward more efficient and sustainable supply chains, particularly in response to climate change, regulatory shifts, and efforts to reduce food waste. For Latin American growers, this presents an opportunity to use packaging technologies that support these goals while meeting export market requirements. Modified Atmosphere Packaging provides a method to slow spoilage and maintain quality during long-distance transport, helping producers reach different markets while improving efficiency in the supply chain."

Bolaño feels that there is much to gain for exporters from Costa Rica and Panama by adopting the Lifepack technology: "Costa Rica and Panama are important exporters of fruits and vegetables. As market expectations around quality, shelf life, and sustainability increase, there is a need for supply chain solutions that support these demands. Incorporating Modified Atmosphere Packaging allows producers in these regions to address logistical challenges while meeting international food safety and sustainability standards. Aypek, in collaboration with Ceiba Agribusiness, provides technical support, training, and ongoing consultation for clients integrating MAP technology. These services help ensure that the packaging is used effectively within existing operations," he concludes.
