Greek exporters challenge Bulgarian law favoring local goods

Greek exporters are raising concerns about a draft law in Bulgaria requiring at least 50% of store products to be of Bulgarian origin. This legislation aims to reduce consumer prices by 20% but may conflict with the European Union's principle of free movement of goods within the EU-27.

According to the Association of Greek Fruit, Vegetable, and Juice Exporters, Incofruit Hellas, Greek fruit and vegetable exports are on an upward trajectory. The export flow of oranges reached 254,155 tons, an 8.5% rise compared to the previous year. Mandarins saw a 13.7% increase, totaling 151,413 tons in the 2023/24 period.

Kiwi exports rose by 6.6%, reaching 196,055 tons between September 1, 2024, and March 28, 2025. Strawberry exports increased by 0.4%, estimated at 33,100 tons from early 2025 until March 28. Apple exports showed a 59.1% increase, reaching 45,084 tons between September 1, 2024, and March 28, 2025.

Greece imported 3,700 tons of apples in 2025, mainly from Poland, North Macedonia, and Spain. Cucumber exports increased by 5.6%, reaching 60,037 tons compared to the 2023/24 period. Tomato exports rose 30%, totaling 16,200 tons from January 1, 2025, to March 28, 2025, with major exports to Bulgaria, Albania, and Romania. Tomato imports exceeded 1,000 tons, mainly from Spain and Turkey.

Incofruit Hellas' special advisor states that Greek exporters are urging the Greek government to prevent the adoption of the Bulgarian legislation, which could impact Greek exports to Bulgaria.
