Dutch onion prices up 25% with 24% export surge

On March 13, Dutch onion prices were listed at €20/100kg. By March 25, Expana's 8C84 - Onion yellow 45-65/50-70mm NL series reported a price increase to €21/100kg.

Market participants attribute the price rise to trader uncertainty over onion stocks. High export levels and early purchases by buyers are speculated to have reduced tradable stock. This has led to a bullish market, with increased bids from buyers to attract sellers. Prices for deliveries scheduled for late April or May are reported at €22-25/100kg.

Dutch onion trade data shows that exports from September to December 2024 surpassed the same period in 2023. The cumulative onion export during this timeframe reached 800,536 metric tons (mt), marking a 24.4% increase compared to 2023. Additionally, KCB/GroentenFruit Huis figures indicate that the first six weeks of 2025 saw a 28.7% year-on-year improvement, totaling 137,798 mt.
