The fresh potato sector's "overall trend has been positive so far this year," according to a CNIPT press release. Production is up, and exports are buoyant, but there are still "a few challenges to keep an eye on as the campaign draws to a close." CNIPT expects the campaign to continue well. "Market fundamentals remain solid, so we can look forward to the next few weeks with confidence."
Production up by 12.2%
In the autumn of 2024, the French potato harvest was characterized by a significant increase in production, with a rise of 12.2% in France, which is over 800,000 tons more than the previous harvest, destined for the fresh and processing markets. This rise was mainly due to an increase in the area under cultivation, while yields remained stable. Against this backdrop of significant growth, stocks of potatoes for fresh markets at the end of January 2025 were estimated to be 470,000 tons higher than at the same time last year. But given the increase in contracted volumes, the amount of potatoes available on the open market has increased by 382,000 tons.
"Stable consumption and dynamic exports"
Domestic demand remains stable overall, despite the slight drop in consumption compared to last year, and consumer prices have not risen. In terms of exports, France has confirmed its status as world leader. Since the start of the campaign, exports have grown by 13% in volume terms to the end of January 2025, representing almost 1.4 million tons exported. Despite a slightly sluggish Italian market and the usual general slowdown in February, all outlets are expanding, and performances have remained solid, with firm international demand.
