Avocado production in Brazil is expanding with increasing global demand, particularly for the avocado variety. The Brazilian Association of Fruit and Derivative Producers and Exporters (Abrafrutas) supports this growth, celebrating new market openings in 2024: Japan, Chile, Costa Rica, and India.
At the "Avocado – Exportation Chile and Japan: New markets for avocados" workshop in São Paulo, hosted by Abacates do Brasil and Abrafrutas, industry stakeholders discussed logistics and commercial opportunities in these new markets. The event included panels on market characteristics and business strategies, featuring experts like Adilson Luís, president of the Brazilian Avocado Association (AAB), Caio César Simão from MAPA/DSV, Alexandre Duarte of Fermac Cargo, and Victor Mendes, Abrafrutas technical assistant.
Brazil, a prominent avocado producer, exported over 24,000 tons in 2024, generating over US$36 million. Victor Mendes noted, "These market openings represent a huge step forward for the sector, especially for producers who have been investing in quality and traceability. Now, the challenge is to ensure that the entire chain is prepared to meet the demands of these countries."
Previously, Brazil accessed Argentina (2019) and Bolivia (2020) for avocado exports. The inclusion of Costa Rica, India, Chile, and Japan enhances Brazilian fruit production's export agenda. Abrafrutas plays a role in this, collaborating with the Ministry of Agriculture and international partners to facilitate negotiations and develop phytosanitary protocols. The organization highlights market diversification as vital for producer stability and sector growth.
