Nakuru County, Kenya, has distributed 11,429 avocado seedlings in Subukia Ward and 4,286 in Waseges Ward. The distribution, led by Agriculture Chief Officer Newton Mwaura, Subukia Ward MCA Hon. Isabella Makori, and Waseges Ward MCA Hon. Elijah Murage, aims to enhance agricultural diversification and farmer income.
Farmers received training on planting techniques, pest and disease management, and avocado cultivation requirements. This approach highlights the county's focus on productivity and sustainable practices. A key aspect was promoting crop diversification to increase income streams and strengthen food and nutrition security.
Beneficiaries noted the potential of avocado farming to transform livelihoods. The Hass variety, known for its shorter maturity period and extended fruiting season, was particularly welcomed. "This initiative represents a significant step towards empowering our farmers and strengthening our local economy," stated Agriculture Chief Officer Newton Mwaura.
