Cold snap devastates stone fruit crops in Sliven region

Farmers in Bulgaria's Sliven region are reporting extensive damage due to a sharp cold snap. The sub-zero temperatures and snow have resulted in the freezing of hundreds of acres of cherries, peaches, and apricots. The farmers claim losses are nearing total for the entire region.

The situation has led to calls for state assistance, with farmers planning protests if aid is not forthcoming. The Branch Chamber "Fruits and Vegetables" has described the situation as both an ecological and economic challenge, posing a threat to the future of fruit cultivation in the area.

The chamber noted, "Next year, there will probably be no peaches, cherries, and plums because the entire harvest has also been destroyed by a pest called the black goldfish."
