Philippine produce gains access to Russian market

The Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) has announced the opening of the Russian market for the Philippines' Hass avocado, calamansi, and okra. Exporters can now initiate shipments, provided all phytosanitary requirements are met. These requirements ensure that agricultural products are free from pests and diseases, safeguarding human, plant, and animal health.

A phytosanitary certificate from the BPI is mandatory for shipments to Russia. Exporters are advised to visit the nearest plant quarantine station for further guidance. Compliance with Russian phytosanitary standards is also necessary.

In November 2022, the Department of Agriculture (DA) engaged with Russia's Ministry of Agriculture to discuss bilateral agricultural trade. The Philippines expressed interest in accessing the Russian market for okra, calamansi, and avocados.

Okra and Hass avocados are identified as commodities with export potential to enhance the Philippines' agricultural earnings. Last year, the Philippines exported 1.52 million kilos of okra, valued at $3.83 million, primarily to Japan. Avocado exports reached 737 metric tons, valued at $1.588 million, with South Korea, China, Hong Kong, and Japan as key markets. South Korea accounted for $1.24 million of the total avocado exports.
