Zambia finalizes avocado export deal with South Africa

The government has finalized bilateral negotiations with the South African government concerning the export of fresh avocado fruits. Agriculture Minister Reuben Mtolo noted that the ministry is collaborating with avocado farmers to ensure compliance with the export conditions outlined in the agreement.

The announcement was made in a speech delivered by Ministry Acting Permanent Secretary Mwendalubi Msoka during the launch of a collaboration with the Lusaka Avocado Multi-purpose Cooperative Society in Lusaka. The initiative aims to assist small-scale farmers and generate employment within the agribusiness sector.

Lusaka Avocado Multi-purpose Cooperative Society Board Chairman Bernard Chiwala mentioned that some members of the society are planning to engage in value addition by packaging avocado oil for use as an edible oil.

Additionally, ShopRite General Manager Charles Bota indicated that the company has six local avocado suppliers, with 45 tons procured over the past year.
