Moroccan carrot exports hit record 69,000 tons in 2024

EastFruit reports that Morocco exported 69,000 tons of carrots in 2024, valued at $18.3 million. This represents a 35% increase from the previous year, setting a new national record. Notably, this marks the fifth consecutive year of record-setting carrot exports, with an average annual growth rate of 27% over the past eight years.

Carrot exports from Morocco occur year-round. Although July and August were traditionally the peak months, the past three years have seen a shift, with substantial volumes also exported in November. The primary markets for Moroccan carrots are African countries, with European exports remaining low at 1.7% in 2024. Notable importers until 2023 included Mauritania, Senegal, and Mali. Recently, exports to Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, and Ghana have increased, contributing to the rapid growth in export volumes.

The geographical reach of Moroccan carrot exports has expanded, with exports to 21 countries in 2024, up from 13 in 2019. Carrots ranked among the top three export vegetables from Morocco in 2024, following tomatoes and sweet peppers.

In response to new market opportunities, Moroccan exporters are exploring beyond traditional partners. In April 2025, the FAO and EBRD will collaborate with FoodEx Morocco to organize a trade mission to Southeast Asia. This initiative seeks to enhance commercial relationships between Morocco, a leading producer in the fresh and frozen produce sector, and Southeast Asia, noted for its rapidly growing fruit and vegetable import market.
