The onset of the mango season presents challenges for Banaganapalli growers in Andhra Pradesh. Pest infestations have impacted the crop, with projections indicating a potential 30% yield reduction. The Banaganapalli mango, a preferred choice for many, is extensively cultivated in the Godavari districts, which are recognized for their large-scale production. In addition to Banaganapalli, the Totapuri from Chittoor and the Suvarnarekha from Vizianagaram are also cultivated in the region.
Farmers engaged in Banaganapalli cultivation are experiencing difficulties. I. Suryanarayana, a trader, stated, "I own a nine-acre mango orchard, most of which is planted with the Banaganapalli variety." Despite pesticide applications, Suryanarayana remains concerned about the pest control measures.
In the Eluru district, adverse weather conditions, including heavy rains and strong winds on April 5, have exacerbated the situation. Over 170 farmers have insured their mango crops, appealing for government intervention to expedite insurance payouts to mitigate their losses. S. Ram Mohan, the horticulture officer in Eluru district, confirmed the pest issues affecting the Banaganapalli variety, forecasting a decrease in overall production.
