Vietnamese pomelos made their debut in a South Korean supermarket chain on April 10, as per the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Vietnam Trade Office in the Republic of Korea. This development is part of Vietnam's ongoing efforts to penetrate this export market. The export price of Vietnamese pomelos to South Korea currently stands at US$2.4 per kilogram, marking a 30% increase compared to the price in the Chinese market.
South Korean consumers show a preference for tropical fruits, including pomelos, which positions Vietnamese products to compete with imports from the U.S. and Thailand. The Republic of Korea is Vietnam's fifth-largest fruit export market, trailing China, the U.S., the EU, and Japan. With an annual production of approximately 1.2 million tons, Vietnam is poised to expand its market share in South Korea.
Negotiations to introduce Vietnamese pomelos to the South Korean market began in 2018, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment. After multiple discussions and technical evaluations, import conditions were finalized in April 2024, allowing Vietnamese pomelos to officially enter the market by August 2024.
