Moldovan Ministry to assess frost impact, offers support measures

Moldova's Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry has announced that it will assess the recent frost's impact on crops and advise farmers accordingly. Two meetings are planned for April 17 — one with regional agricultural departments and another with sector associations — to collect data and develop response strategies.

"It's too early to estimate the full damage. Frosts are still forecast in the coming days, and longer-term monitoring is needed," the ministry said. Local authorities are currently gathering information from affected regions.

Over the past three years, government support for agriculture has exceeded 6 billion lei. The "Budget Plus" initiative recently added 200 million lei to the National Fund for Agricultural and Rural Development.

Additionally, €300 million in EU funding has been allocated for agricultural investment under the Economic Growth Plan.

Farmers can access 50% of subsidies for frost protection systems via the AIPA agency, as well as up to 70% coverage for crop insurance premiums. In 2024, more than 500 applications were submitted, with 61 million lei already disbursed to cover premiums.

In recent years, farmers have expanded protected orchards to nearly 1,000 hectares.
