According to Trade and Tourism Minister Faiyaz Koya, the Fijian economy was cushioned by its agricultural sector when there were no tourists coming to Fiji. “In 2021, agricultural exports increased by 43.7 per cent compared to 2019 to $284.9 million,” the minister said. “These figures show us how you are contributing to the growth of the nation. And, your government wants you to continue this good work. “It’s part of our greater vision of a diversified economy — an economy that doesn’t rely heavily on any one sector. An economy whose progress is fueled from ground up.”
Mr Koya said that in the past two years, Fiji had witnessed significant growth in export of kava, ginger and turmeric among other spices. He said that compared with 2019, kava export in 2021 increased by 29 per cent to $41.9 million, turmeric by 254 per cent to $23 million while spices grew by 175 per cent to $31.9 million.
The minister added that beside Fiji’s traditional crops, these were the potential crops they could venture into, during the off-season. He added there were many other agro-products that would do well in this region such as pineapple, papaya and mangoes.
