Avocados are currently selling for $7.99 each at New World. As the popular fruit is technically still in season, why the incredible prices then? A lot of New Zealand’s avocado crops are grown in Northland – a region hard hit by the extreme weather earlier this year, which is most likely behind the expensive avocado price.
There might also be an apple shortage later this year, along with some other household staples. Crops like potatoes and onions might also increase in price throughout winter and into spring off the back of the floods in Pukekohe.
New season avocado crops will start to fill our supermarket shelves in late May or earlier June, so until then it might pay to fill your trolley up with other seasonal produce.
