Australian jackfruit sector set to expand after $1 million injection

Following a $1 million injection to help it ramp up production to meet growing domestic demand, the Australian jackfruit industry is set to expand. The funding comes from Australian statutory corporation AgriFutures Australia, which has invested the money to develop a ready-to-market jackfruit product.

Jackfruit has been identified as a “priority” for investment by the Australian Emerging Topical Fruits Strategic RD&E Plan. According to AgriFutures Emerging Industries senior manager, Dr Olivia Reynolds, the ‘expansion of plantings’ in Australia is due to ‘strong market demand’. The project will work with growers, processors and retailers to build a supply chain while developing three processed jackfruit products to increase planting capacity or divert excess fruit.
