The cherry harvest is underway in Central Otago, New Zealand and exports have already started for Pure Pac who grow over 75 hectares of cherries in the region.
“We started picking last Wednesday, around four days earlier than normal due to the warm sunny days leading up to harvest,” said Jeff Chambers, Sales Consultant at Pure Pac. “At the moment most of the fruit will go to the domestic market, but we will exported our first small volumes of cherries to Taiwan and Singapore last Friday.”
Pure Pac grow a range of varieties, the main varieties for export are Santina, Stella, Lapin, Sweetheart, Staccato, Sandra Rose and Romance.
The crop is down slightly from early forecasts but still up on last year's volumes.
“If the Chilean volumes are down, as has been forecast it should mean New Zealand cherries arrive on a good market.”
