McCormack supports ACCC inquiry into Australian fruit and vegetable pricing

Federal Nationals Member for Riverina, Michael McCormack, is advocating for an Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) investigation into fruit and vegetable prices in supermarkets. McCormack stated his clear support for the inquiry, citing the significant price increases seen in Labor's cost-of-living crisis.

McCormack pointed out the stark price discrepancies, such as zucchinis selling for $1.80 per kilo from farmers but costing consumers up to $10 per kilo. He urged for this investigation alongside The Nationals' proposed inquiry into meat pricing, highlighting the need for fairness in pricing for both consumers and farmers.

He criticized the Albanese Government for its indifference towards the struggles of Australian farmers and its policy changes that are detrimental to the farming industry. McCormack expressed concern over the potential exodus of vegetable growers, with 30% considering leaving the industry, according to an AusVeg survey.

McCormack urged the government to use all available tools to ensure fair treatment for farmers and consumers by big supermarkets, and suggested that an ACCC inquiry would be a positive initial step.
