Food prices soar in Lagos ahead of Eid Kabir celebrations

In anticipation of the 2024 Eid Kabir celebrations, Lagos markets have experienced a significant increase in the cost of both perishable and non-perishable goods, with reports indicating a surge of over 300 percent, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN). A recent survey by NAN across several key markets in Lagos, including Mile 12, Oyingbo, Surulere, and Ajah, revealed an alarming rise in food prices, with some items witnessing nearly a 400 percent increase within a year.

Specifically, a 50-kg basket of tomatoes, which was priced at N35,000 in 2023, now costs N100,000 at Mile 12 and reaches up to N120,000 in the upscale regions of Lekki and Ajah.

Scotch Bonnet peppers, also known as "Rodo" or "Laredo," have seen a dramatic price jump of over 600 percent, with a 50-kg bag now selling for N120,000, up from N18,000. Prices for other items such as bell peppers, referred to as "Natasha," and red chilli peppers, known as "Bawa or combo," have similarly skyrocketed to N95,000 and N110,000 respectively from their previous prices of N21,000 and N22,000.

Additionally, a 100-kg basket of onions now sells for N70,000, a significant increase from N25,000.
