Watermelons, yellow melons, and stone fruits the most popular crops

"The markets in central and southern Italy are the most surprising this year"

Changing weather patterns in different parts of Italy have altered buying preferences. In fact, while the northern regions have been characterized by instability and heavy rains over the past 3 months, in the central-south, prolonged heat waves have instead contributed to an increased demand for fresh fruit.

Pietro Bastiano (pictured below), Fe.Vi Frutta's sales manager for wholesale markets, explains: "We reach all regions except Sardinia, with almost daily deliveries to more than 50 marketplaces, but this year we're doing great especially in central and southern Italy, from Tuscany to Sicily. These customers have surprised us more than others, with requests that are satisfactory and, in some cases, have even doubled compared to the previous summer."

According to the Copernicus Observatory, rainfall in northern Italy increased by 70% in the last quarter, while temperatures in central and southern Italy were up to 7°C higher than the average of the last 30 years, after a similarly mild winter and fall, which also affected crops, with lower yields and smaller sizes, especially for stone fruits.

"Sales in the northern regions are slower than in previous years, while in the rest of Italy the trend is decidedly positive, also thanks to the lively start of the hotel and restaurant sector in general. Demand for fresh fruit is strong. We are selling more watermelons, yellow melons, apricots, percoche, nectarines, plums and peaches," concludes the operator.
