Packaging line designed to extend the shelf life of fruit and vegetables

Extending the shelf life of fruits and vegetables with an innovative primary packaging system is what Italian company Sfregola Materie Plastiche (SMP) has to offer, with a range of new products for both fruit and vegetable growers and consumers that meet the needs of the entire supply chain.

In view of the European and global campaigns against food waste, and considering that the loss of fruit and vegetables along the supply chain represents a significant loss of money for operators, the ability to guarantee a longer shelf life is an added value for a product intended not only for retailers but for all operators in the sector.

"Firstly, we propose LifeBag, a bag that can extend the life of fruits and vegetables up to four times. It is compostable and biodegradable, with a single-layer perforated film that can inhibit the proliferation of all micro-organisms that degrade the quality of fruits and vegetables. In other words, the bag prolongs the life of fruits and vegetables thanks to its innovative freshness preserving composition. With its natural active ingredients, this bag creates an ideal environment to preserve the integrity of fruits and vegetables," says the company.

LifeBox was also launched with the same objective, to extend shelf life with a biodegradable and compostable paper tray. It is suitable for all products that are better protected by trays, such as small fruits like strawberries, raspberries, blueberries.

LifeBox's performance is enhanced by LifeMat, a compostable and biodegradable mat that, when applied to the bottom of the tray, further improves shelf life.

"And to complete the range, we have included LifeFilm, which is useful for making heat-sealed packaging and flow packs, in different sizes."
