Singapore durian traders observe 20% reduction in supply

Durian traders in Singapore have observed a 20% reduction in supply, attributed to extreme weather conditions in Malaysia, impacting the harvest period and subsequently the inflow of durians into Singapore. Despite this, the retail prices for durians have not been affected, maintaining stability. The 227 Katong Durian store in Singapore exemplifies the fluctuating supply dynamics, with instances of receiving significantly less supply abruptly. The price for the Musang King variety remains consistent with the previous year's range of S$23-38 (US$17-28).

According to Charlie Phua, business development director at Durian Supply, Singapore continues to receive durian imports from Malaysia due to logistical advantages, facilitating easier transportation compared to China. With expectations set for an increase in harvest by August, a subsequent reduction in durian prices is anticipated. Singapore, which sources approximately 85% of its durians from Malaysia, imported around 100,000 kilograms daily during peak season last year, highlighting the significant trade flow between the two nations.
