Hauiti Berries

Blueberry operation near Tolaga Bay ceases activities

A blueberry operation located near Tolaga Bay, New Zealand, Hauiti Berries, ceased its activities on April 11, following what was described as a series of challenges. Hauiti Berries Limited Partnership confirmed the closure in a statement on July 11.

This enterprise, a joint venture between Nati Growth Limited and Hauiti Incorporation, was established in 2018 and spanned four hectares. Despite a report by the Gisborne Herald in late 2023 indicating the operation was on course to meet its harvest targets with a quality yield and a complete picking team, adverse weather conditions last year severely impacted the viability of the operation. The chairman of Hauiti Berries, Wayne Amaru, highlighted the decision to close was difficult and taken with the wellbeing of the impacted employees, their families, and the wider community in mind. The closure affects one full-time position, with the employee being reassigned within Nati Growth, while seasonal workers concluded their roles in February 2024.

Amaru acknowledged the support from the community, hapū, and iwi, expressing gratitude for their solidarity over the six years of operation. He noted the challenges in meeting operational expectations and the necessity to explore more sustainable investment avenues.
