Haribhanga mango from Bangladesh gains global recognition

The Haribhanga mango, originating from Rangpur, Bangladesh, has achieved global recognition and was recently designated as a Geographical Indication (GI) product. This year marked a milestone with the inaugural export of a 200 kg consignment to Germany, showcasing the mango's international appeal. The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) in Mithapukur subdistrict facilitated this export from Khalilur Rahman's orchard in Padagoanj village.

To bolster the production of export-quality mangoes, the subdistrict agriculture office has initiated a project targeting selected orchards for development. This includes providing growers with advanced training, along with complimentary medicine and fertiliser, while maintaining strict supervision over the cultivation process. The initiative's success was celebrated at an exhibition on June 20, attended by Agriculture Minister Md Abdus Shahid, who highlighted Bangladesh's growing economy and the investment potential within its food system.

Mithapukur Subdistrict Agriculture Officer Mohammad Saidul Abedin reported that Green Global Agro Ltd received the 200 kg order from Germany, with expectations for additional orders. Despite challenges such as drought and extreme weather conditions, the cultivation of Haribhanga mangoes has increased this year, covering 1,935 hectares of land in Rangpur. This expansion reflects the variety's growing popularity and the concerted efforts to meet both local and international demand.
