In the past two years, Johor has seen a notable contribution from durian exports, surpassing RM81 million in value. Datuk Zahari Sarip, overseeing agriculture and rural sectors, highlighted that despite challenging weather, durian yield for 2024 is anticipated to marginally increase from the previous year. The production recorded was 138,945.51 tons in 2022 and 119,309.60 tons in 2023. Durian seasons in Johor occur thrice annually, with the latest yield reported at 20,284 tons.
The Tangkak district emerged as the top durian producer in Johor in 2023, with cultivation spanning over 15,804 ha. The Musang King variety has been earmarked for export markets, fetching prices up to RM 75 per kg. Durian exports to countries including China, Australia, and the US among others, amassed an export value of RM 41.1 million in 2022 and over RM 40.3 million in 2023. As of July, 464,794 kg of durian have been exported, contributing over RM 26.3 million to the local economy. The state forecasts a continuation in the rising demand for Malaysian durian, which grew by 9.5% from 2020 to 2022.
