Due to the increased presence of stone fruit and berries, citrus fruits and exotic fruits traditionally take a back seat in summer. "We are currently offering mainly juice oranges, predominantly from Egypt and South Africa, while the Spanish season is coming to an end. In terms of price, the produce is roughly at the same level as last year. Demand is consistently satisfactory and stable, although demand usually increases rapidly when the outside temperatures rise," says Ufuk Yildirim, junior manager of Lider Fruit Ltd, which is based in the Frischezentrum (Fresh Produce Centre) Frankfurt.
Pitahaya red-red from Turkish production.
Red and yellow pitahaya from Ecuador is traded alongside Turkish produce.
Meanwhile, the family business also stocks a wide selection of exotic fruits, such as dragon fruit. Yildirim: "We have recently started to offer pitahaya from Turkey as a cheaper alternative to the goods flown in from Vietnam and Ecuador. Although the quality of Turkish produce cannot quite compete with fruit flown in from overseas, we have found an attractive new product. The produce is particularly popular with our weekly market and specialist retail customers."
Okan Yildirim runs the wholesale business together with his son Ufuk.
