Kenya's engagement in macadamia nut cultivation has escalated its status to a prominent exporter within the region, overcoming various regulatory and market hurdles. This development is outlined in the 2024 Africa Agriculture Status Report by the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA). The report credits the nation's investment in macadamia agriculture and the integration of digital platforms for farm management as pivotal in securing a position in the international market.
The document underscores the role of micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in fostering and reshaping Africa's food systems towards sustainable economic advancement. AGRA's President, Agnes Kalibata, emphasized the instrumental role of MSMEs in propelling agricultural productivity and economic progress. "The Africa Agriculture Status Report 2024 highlights the transformative role of MSMEs in shaping Africa's agri-food landscape. By harnessing the power of the private sector, we can drive meaningful food systems transformation and achieve sustainable growth," Kalibata remarked.
Findings from the study show that the private sector is responsible for 80 percent of the continent's food economy, with MSMEs managing approximately 85 percent of the agri-food value chains. Kalibata called for enhanced support and cooperation between the government and the private sector to overcome challenges and explore new opportunities for sustainable development.
Focusing on nations such as Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana, Malawi, Zambia, and Tanzania, the report illustrates how investments in cash crops, infrastructure, and digital technologies are pivotal in diversifying and augmenting export growth. It advocates for collaborative efforts among governments, development partners, and private sector entities in tackling identified challenges and capitalizing on growth opportunities through infrastructure investments and MSME support.
The report also highlights the transformative impact of digital technology on agricultural value chains, enhancing access to inputs, credit, and market information. Digital platforms like M-Kulima and M-Pesa in East Africa are simplifying transactions and improving the efficiency of input distribution. Moreover, digital tractor leasing services such as Hello Tractor are making mechanization more accessible to smallholder farmers, poised to boost productivity and reduce costs.
