In the heart of Andalusia, in a picturesque village in Malaga, a young producer has launched an initiative that seeks to change the way agricultural products are seen and consumed, connecting buyers and consumers with producers as part of a commitment to the organic model. This is the Greenland Organic project.
"I have been working the land with my family since I was a child, learning the secrets of organic farming and growing to love our land," says Antonio González, manager of Greenland Organic. "My parents were pioneers in the cultivation of organic citrus fruits in this area, especially lemons, although today we also work with oranges, bitter oranges, mandarins or limes."
"We are more than just a company, we are a bridge between growers and the kind of conscious consumers who appreciate freshness and look at the origin of the products that reach their tables. We want consumers to know who is behind each product they buy, and to have the peace of mind of knowing that each fruit has been cultivated with dedication and respect for nature, selling it without intermediaries who make the process more expensive," says the 28 year old producer.
"All our products are grown and produced in Andalusia by me and by people close to me: family, friends and neighbours who share the same passion for organic farming," he says.
"Before the pandemic, sales of organic products were booming in Spain; however, this trend has slowed down in recent years, which is why we decided to start exporting," says Antonio González. "To do this, our family has had to partner with other producers in the area, and thanks to this, we can fill orders with other products, such as avocado, mango, pitahaya, passion fruit and nuts, among others, and further solidify the project."
"Now, in addition to selling to consumer associations, we are also supplying food stores and restaurants, both in Spain and France and, since recently, also in Belgium. In the future, we would like to supply small supermarket chains. Eventually, we hope to expand into markets such as Germany and Switzerland, among others," says the young entrepreneur.
"By buying our products, consumers are not only acquiring fresh and organic foods, but also supporting local growers, who receive a fair price for their work. Additionally, we are giving them the chance to get to know the origin of what they consume by inviting them to visit our farms and see first-hand how we grow our products," says Antonio González.
