Garlic is known as a flavour enhancer and a popular remedy for colds, along with lemons and ginger in Russian

Russia's garlic market sees 15% surge late winter 2024

By early 2024, garlic sales in Russia had surged by 15% compared to the previous year.

Russia imports up to 80% of garlic, primarily from China, making prices highly sensitive to external factors such as weather conditions in China and fluctuations in the ruble's exchange rate.

Despite the year-round stability in garlic prices, driven largely by the dominance of imports, the lowest prices are typically observed from late summer to mid-autumn, according to Rosstat. Locally grown garlic from regions such as the North Caucasus is also available and tends to be cheaper.

As of July 2024, the lowest garlic prices were found in Dagestan, Ingushetia, and Adygea, where prices were under 3.0 EUR per kilogram. Conversely, the highest prices were reported in Chukotka (6.8 EUR/kg), Yakutia (4.9 EUR/kg), and the Kaliningrad region (4.8 EUR/kg).
