The Chilean company Hortifrut is expanding its operations to Guatemala intending to produce berries and blackberries mainly for the US market. The company received legal advice from the García & Bodán firm for its establishment in the Central American country.
Hortifrut, which began operations in Chile in 1983 to supply berries worldwide throughout the year, has positioned itself as the world's largest producer and marketer of blueberries and the second largest in the general category of berries.
"With this project, Guatemala will begin to produce berries and blackberries under Hortifrut's international standards, setting a new benchmark in the country's agricultural industry," the firm stated.
The García & Bodán law firm led Hortifrut's intellectual property protection strategy, focusing on innovation and plant breeding. One of the main challenges was adapting Hortifrut's international operation to local conditions in Guatemala, ensuring operational integrity, and applying local protection clauses, they stated.
Hortifrut bases its business model on strategic alliances that link the best producers in the southern hemisphere with their counterparts in the northern hemisphere, integrating the business from plant genetics to the final consumer. The company has a presence in several countries, including the United States, Mexico, Colombia, Brazil, Peru, Europe, Asia, and its home country, Chile.
