Nova Siri Genetics will produce 150 million strawberry plants, 15% more than last season

Nova Siri Genetics (NSG), an Italian company that researches and experiments with new strawberry and berry varieties, will consolidate its international growth and expansion phase this coming season. Spain will once again be one of the reference markets for NSG, thanks to the positive performance its early strawberry varieties, NSG 203-Marimbella®, NSG 465-Rossetta®, and NSG 207-Gioelita®, had during the last seasons. These varieties stand out for their rusticity, the high quality of their fruits, and the good yields achieved in the province of Huelva, the area with the highest berry production in Europe.

With a view to the new 2024-2025 season, there are a total of 15 licensed nurseries for the propagation of Nova Siri Genetics' strawberry varieties in Spain and Poland. They will produce about 150 million strawberry plants. This is 15% more than the total volume that NSG achieved last season, thanks to more nurseries growing their varieties and allocating more area to do so.

In Spain, NSG's strawberry varieties are multiplied in nurseries located in Castilla y León, which have allocated about 135 hectares to grow these strawberry varieties. As a result, NSG will produce approximately 90 million plants in Spain, which will be distributed among producers in the province of Huelva, Italy, and North African countries.

The potted strawberry plants started to be delivered during the first half of September so production takes place in the last months of the year. The uprooting and delivery of the fresh plants will begin in early October so production can start in January.

"We owe the good evolution in demand for our innovative strawberry varieties, above all, to their rusticity and precocity. These characteristics guarantee strawberry producers in Spain can start marketing their strawberries in November and maintain quality production until June," stated Nicola Tufaro, breeder and head breeder of Nova Siri Genetics.

Producers in Spain and the province of Huelva continue to bet on the early NSG 203-Marimbella®, NSG 465-Rossetta® and NSG 207-Gioelita® strawberry varieties. "Producers value these NSG varieties because they guarantee quality, precocity, rusticity, productivity, sustainability, and produce strawberries with excellent flavor, size, shape, color, and improved organoleptic characteristics that are appreciated by consumers and markets," he added.

New varieties and international expansion
Nova Siri Genetics is continuing its work to improve and breed new strawberries and berries. During the coming season, NSG will carry out field trials with Spanish producers of a new strawberry variety for which it has already submitted a patent application at the European level. This new variety stands out for its excellent characteristics and longer shelf life, which is of particular value for growers.

NSG also plans to multiply its strawberry varieties in nurseries in Egypt and India, given the growing interest from local producers and nurseries in these countries and the good results achieved by the company in its traditional markets.

Participation in Fruit Attraction
Nova Siri Genetics will participate in Fruit Attraction 2024, one of the sector's most important international meetings, which will be held from October 8 to 10 in Madrid. At its stand (9G06, Hall 9 of IFEMA), the company will showcase the excellent results that its berry varieties are achieving and provide details of the new projects that are underway to continue advancing in the cultivation and production of quality strawberries.
