Transformations in the sustainability, productivity and economics of avocado production are behind a newly launched data management package aimed at growers and cooperatives worldwide. Haskelberg Nurseries, a global provider of avocado and fruit tree seedlings, has developed the Canacado Hub in partnership with Yellow Brick AgTech. It says its new tool will bring better data management and improved decision-making to a crop that's expected to be worth $25bn globally by 2030.
"By bringing the power of big data and advanced analytics to the world's avocado growers, we hope to support cooperatives and growers to make better informed agronomic decisions and thus produce better fruit, more profitably and more sustainably. The Canacado Hub embodies Haskelberg's commitment to innovation and reflects our well-known reputation in the avocado industry," says Udi Haskelberg, CEO of Haskelberg Nurseries.
Developed as a joint venture between Haskelberg Nurseries and Yellow Brick AgTech, an agri-tech investor and incubator, the Canacado Hub combines Haskelberg's global experience with Yellow Brick's software development expertise.
The Hub enables independent growers and cooperatives to record and share reams of data from their orchards, including genetic, biotic, and abiotic statistics, and agronomic information such as crop input usage and irrigation statistics. The partners say it is the first tool for growers that can help identify the optimal combination of rootstocks and varieties for specific environments, optimize yields, and increase profitability.
Johnathan Kol-Bar, Chairman of Yellow Brick Capital, says, "Our collaboration with Haskelberg Nurseries has created a powerful tool that not only enhances data collection and analysis but also fosters a collaborative environment for the global avocado community. Water usage, carbon, and soil health are all associated with sustainability concerns in avocado production," he notes. "The Hub, and analysis of the data it will collect, will help growers and cooperatives improve resource-use efficiency, whether through more targeted use of crop inputs today, or selection of more water-efficient genetics for the future."
The Canacado Hub, which will be available with several pricing options including a free version for smaller growers, consolidates and manages orchard data in one secure, accessible location, allowing users to benchmark their performance and optimize resources. The platform permits the reporting of orchard performance through a simple interface, accessed from a cell phone or tablet as well as a desktop or laptop browser.
The first version of the Hub – specific to avocado growers – launches at the Fruit Attraction event, in Madrid, Spain, from 8-10 October. The partners plan future versions for additional crops and products, providing the tools and insights growers need to optimize crop performance and drive growth.
