The supply of organic green onions from Mexico looks to be changing. 'It has been snug for the last couple of weeks but it has changed considerably. It doesn't seem as tight as it was," says Darrell Beyer with The Beyer Company/Bluebird Mountain Organics, which sources its green onions year-round out of Mexico, and is also awaiting the effects, if any, of Hurricane Helene.
The supply tightened partly because of Mexico's heat, which in some regions reached 115 degrees. "They had to harvest at night and could only get so much. The quality was so-so and it definitely put some pressure on the production," says Beyer, adding that the supply of green onions generally tightens between August and October.
Green onion movement steady
As for pricing, it had been higher in the low to mid $30s and now it's come back down to between $24-$26. "The demand for green onions is okay. I think some people still have some expensive onions. I think they're trying to clean up a bit of inventory, hence why the market is also coming off. However movement is pretty steady," says Beyer.
Looking ahead, Beyer sees movement staying steady and pricing becoming more consistent again. "I think it will get a little more expensive again towards Thanksgiving but from here until mid-October, it should be pretty steady," he says.
