Windermere Berry Farm, situated in Whanganui, is gearing up for its anticipated best season yet, with plans to commence exports to Vietnam. This initiative marks a new chapter for the farm, which has been under the stewardship of the Boswell family since 2011. The farm, originally established 73 years ago as Windermere Gardens by the Forks and Walker families, has evolved significantly, now boasting a nine-month growing season and cultivating a variety of strawberry cultivars on tabletops to ensure continuous production.
The farm is known for its focus on flavor and quality, producing strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, and blueberries. This year, in addition to its existing markets in Thailand and Malaysia, Windermere is set to export strawberries to Vietnam, a move facilitated by the free-trade agreement between New Zealand and Vietnam. The export process has involved collaboration with Strawberry Growers New Zealand, the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI), and Vietnamese partners.
Recent advancements have led to a significant increase in raspberry production, with expectations of an 80% yield increase due to the introduction of two new varieties of raspberries and blackberries. The farm's commitment is evident in its shift towards high-flavor, dessert-grade berries, supported by rigorous control over nutrient levels and the use of tunnel protection.
The farm benefits from Whanganui's temperate climate and utilizes a spring-fed dam for irrigation, eliminating the risk of soil-borne diseases through the use of coir instead of soil. While not certified organic, Windermere employs mostly spray-free practices, favoring natural alternatives like liquid seaweed to enhance plant growth.
