In Moldova, the "Moldova" grape variety has been cultivated for over four decades, serving as the nation's horticultural envoy globally. This variety has seen a surge in popularity across international markets, attributed to its frost resistance, large and attractive clusters, tangy flavor profile, and its durability for storage and transport. Consequently, it has secured a presence in major supermarket chains around the world. Moldovan producers have successfully penetrated markets in the United Arab Emirates, Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Poland, and over 30 other countries, establishing a loyal consumer base.
Petru Mihov, founder and CEO of Terra Vitis, stated, "We produce Moldova grapes using the Pergola system. We achieve a rich harvest, and the grapes have a very attractive commercial appearance. Our region's day and night temperatures differ vastly, so this dark grape's flavor quality is undeniable. The marketing window is another plus. Picking begins on September 1, and since you can keep this grape in cold storage for three to six months, marketing continues through February."
Statistical data from 2023 indicates a notable increase in Moldovan grape exports, reaching over 88,000 tons, up from 57,000 tons in the previous season. Over the last decade, exports have doubled from 37,000 tons in 2013. The European market share for Moldovan grapes has escalated to 50% this year from 35% in the previous season. Additionally, these grapes have expanded their presence in the EU market, with exports to Romania, Poland, Croatia, Latvia, the Netherlands, Germany, Great Britain, and initiating exports to Sweden.
Adoption of modern viticulture techniques, including intensive vine training systems like tendone/pergola and gable, has contributed to this success. These methods have led to higher yields and enhanced grape quality, with more than 800 hectares of such vineyards established in recent years. Approximately 98% of grapes from these plantations are classified as Class I or Extra. Moldova's seeded grapes, rich in antioxidants, fiber, and anti-inflammatory properties, offer numerous health benefits, promoting heart health, boosting the immune system, and supporting overall well-being.
