This year, a critical situation has arisen in Ukraine, regarding the storage of potato harvests. Residents struggle to preserve their potatoes in basements, and many farms have not yet completed their harvest. This year is considered one of the most challenging for potato growers. Farmers have increased the acreage devoted to potatoes and are making winter reserves to avoid a food crisis.
Record heat in July and a five-month drought have negatively impacted the quality of the harvest. As a result of the shortage of marketable potatoes, Ukraine began importing vegetables from Poland and Lithuania in September. Farmers are sounding the alarm as potato prices rise at record rates, with expectations of even greater increases in February.
Meanwhile, those who have managed to harvest a good crop are pleased to be able to feed their families and sell the surplus. However, residents report serious storage issues. Slugs and rodents are damaging the harvest: "Slugs are eating the crops in the fields and the cellars. Mice have also made their presence known," said concerned farmers.
