During the first half of 2024, the value of Colombia's agro-food exports increased by 8.1%, from USD 5.131 billion in 2023 to USD 5.547 billion in 2024. "This growth is especially significant in the case of products such as bananas, which grew by 70% after overcoming the challenges of high production costs and adverse weather conditions. Other products, such as fresh flowers, with a 12.6% increase, and fresh fruits such as mango and gulupa, which grew by 22.8%, also contributed to the sustained expansion trend," says Liliana García, director of ProColombia in Spain, Portugal and Italy.
"ProColombia, which has commercial representation and offices in more than 25 countries around the world, plays a vital role in connecting Colombian exporters with international markets, offering them advice on how to comply with the necessary regulations and certifications, especially in a European environment increasingly focused on sustainability and the Green Deal," says García.
García also highlighted the crucial role played by the entity, attached to the Colombian Ministry of Trade, Industry and Tourism, in backing exporters and promoting iconic products such as avocado, banana, gulupa and cape gooseberry.
During events such as Fruit Attraction, ProColombia joins companies such as Corpohass, the Corporation of Hass Avocado Producers and Exporters of Colombia, providing them the necessary space to showcase their products globally. According to García, "ProColombia is a guarantee seal for Colombian exporters," ensuring that companies are able to access international markets with the government's support.
The director says that ProColombia is helping exporters comply with the requirements of the European Green Deal. "We want these fruit, flower and coffee exports to reach Europe with all the right certifications; that's what we are working on," says García. She also stressed that the entity remains committed to training producers to ensure that products meet the environmental standards required in the European market.
