Opening of new hydroponic breeding facility

Enza Zaden has officially opened a new hydroponic breeding facility in Enkhuizen, designed to advance the development of hydroponic lettuce varieties. Equipped with a mobile gully system, the facility replicates commercial growing conditions, allowing plants to move automatically along tracks, spacing plants according to their growth stage and maximizing growth capacity. The system is tailor-made for Enza Zaden to support efficient breeding and can be flexibly adapted for different breeding programs and trials.

During the Discovery Field Days in Twisk, Netherlands, Enza Zaden already showed their selection of fully Bremia-resistant iceberg lettuce varieties for outdoor cultivation. In the hydroponic greenhouse, visitors could see Enza lettuce varieties that grow rapidly at high density. This greenhouse has more than 67 trials this year. Enza showed new varieties suitable for high-density cultivation, with harvest possibilities for loose leaf lettuce (12-15 cm) and leaf lettuce heads.
